Living rurally raises the risk of intimate partner violence for women. The main risk factors are the same as in the city, but there are issues specific to the bush that have to be addressed: In rural Australia, everyone knows your business – so it’s harder for victims of violence to get help [ie everyone knows but nobody wants to intervene]

World Health Org air quality mismatch/hypocrisy
It's now come out that when the World Health Org did its own "return to office" in May 2020, they upgraded air quality! while telling _us_ "covid isn't airborne, that's a myth"!
Maaaybe the department talking to the world wasn't the same department as sorted out the precautions and wrote that document.

  • Delete my current WiiU user so I can login my Pretendo account with the same username as my NNID
    • Pros: use the same username, easier for people to find me
    • Cons: no longer able to log into the parts of nintendo network which are still working, risking losing my mk8 save if I didn’t use savemii correctly
  • Create a pretendo account with a different username
    • Cons: harder for people to find me
    • Pros: don’t have to delete my current account (which is also kinda a con since you can’t reorder accounts on the wiiu)

Followup on `tokio-tar`. As expected, nothing happened so far.
Apparently there is also a `tokio-tar-up2date` crate which is exactly the same thing as `tokio-tar` right now. Probably it was created as a temporary hack while `tokio-tar` was unresponsive.
Then, there is a `krata-tokio-tar` crate that's more recent. However, this one really seems like fork of a fork that was created for the same of some specific project and still without any hope of long-term maintenance. I've refiled my pull request there as well.
I've also filed a bug for #UV, since using dead dependencies is not a good practice.

Common Trends and Long-Run Multipliers in Nonlinear Structural VARs
James A. Duffy, Sophocles Mavroeidis
arxiv.org/abs/2404.05349 arxiv.org/pdf/2404.05349
arXiv:2404.05349v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: While it is widely recognised that linear (structural) VARs may omit important features of economic time series, the use of nonlinear SVARs has to date been almost entirely confined to the modelling of stationary time series, because of a lack of understanding as to how common stochastic trends may be accommodated within nonlinear VAR models. This has unfortunately circumscribed the range of series to which such models can be applied -- and/or required that these series be first transformed to stationarity, a potential source of misspecification -- and prevented the use of long-run identifying restrictions in these models. To address these problems, we develop a flexible class of additively time-separable nonlinear SVARs, which subsume models with threshold-type endogenous regime switching, both of the piecewise linear and smooth transition varieties. We extend the Granger-Johansen representation theorem to this class of models, obtaining conditions that specialise exactly to the usual ones when the model is linear. We further show that, as a corollary, these models are capable of supporting the same kinds of long-run identifying restrictions as are available in linear cointegrated SVARs.

We got the cats some cardboard scratchers. They said, "Hey, thanks for the comfy beds!" (and proceeded to scratch things right next to the scratchers instead of the scratchers themselves) 🙄
#CatsOfMastodon

a black cat with white chest, fully sitting on a cat scratcher but with her head up looking at the camera. The scratcher is shaped like a wave on top, with a black/white/gray cat pattern on the side, and the top showing the corrugated cardboard. The scratcher is sitting on top of a generic pattern door mat, in front of a door.
Same scene (doormat, door, scratcher), but this time the black cat is curled up on the scratcher, head looking at the floor (with face not visible, but her eyes are closed as she dozes off). Net to her, there's now a tuxedo cat with a white chest/neck who is staring intently out the window on the door.

To some, it is a baffling pairing. Evangelicals, who typically adhere to a literal reading of the Bible and, theoretically, follow a strict code that opposes infidelity, immorality and abortion and is critical of same-sex relationships, seem an odd match-up…

I loathe Paul Tierney as much as anyone, but the "controversy" around the wrongful awarding of the drop ball after a head injury is some serious blame-shifting from a team who had possession a full two-minutes later and coughed up the ball at the edge of the box to even allow the game-winner.
As many have pointed out, the more incompetent decision on the very same play is ignoring Yates' extremely reckless attempt. I would like to understand any VAR review on that.

Video game still of Liu Kang performing a flying kick in Mortal Kombat. He is shirtless, with black and red pants and is yelling as he flies five feet off the ground towards Reptile.
Alexis Mac Allister, in purple, heads the ball away. Just behind him, Nottingham Forest's captain, Ryan Yates, is flying in with his leg well above-the shoulders of the standing players. He collides with Konate who is trying to shield himself from the impact.

I've been pretty upset about the FMA being bought out, and so much stuff becoming locked away, requiring users to sign up to access The Free Music Archive. I feel as though I cannot trust Peertube or Funkwhale to distribute exclusively free cultural works the same way the FMA did. I want to ensure I can do the same.
I also think I want to avoid scientific works, as they're already easy to access and widely distributed.

Earlier this week, I rode on the BART train (light rail in the San Francisco Bay Area) for the first time since 2019. I've avoided it throughout the pandemic so far because I don't want to get sick, but thanks to their air quality upgrades and my extremely effective PAPR, I decided to give it a try.
I'm glad I did!
Compared to driving:

* same total travel time,
* lower climate impact,
* much cheaper - saving me $35 for the d…

I am so glad I didn't absolutely *have* to buy an RTX card from this generation. At least in my opinion, the prices were the right indicator that even the lower tier Nvidia RT-capable cards are an early adopter thing dressed as a mass product. You don't *need* to play games with RT, unless you love paying more for lower resolution upscaled to an extrapolated image, at lower FPS and higher lag. Advice for science writers: pretend, just for a moment, that you actually respect your readers' time. Stop telling rambling stories. So much of climate science writing is horrific to wade through bcs it's written using the same old rules for writing fiction novels: a hook, building energy, climax, etc. It's garbage. Don't do that shit. No one even knows how to write a useful abstract. Pretend your reader is busy doing smth important and u need to get the key points across as …

This is a good point. I’m a big proponent of *provider diversity*. Every cloud service you use should have a different login. Every piece of data you create should have an easily-accessible copy in your local file system. Everything on your computer should be backed up offsite with a separate cloud backup.
Do not put all your eggs into one cloud service basket. Do not use the same login for unrelated services. This rules out most of Apple’s cloud products for me.

This take on solar power is correct. And the same reasoning applies to batteries, which if anything are dropping in price even faster than PVs (it’s a less mature industry). caseyhandmer.wordpress.com/202

This chart shows costs of photovoltaic panels as a function of cumulative production from 1976 to 2023, which allows the derivation of a learning rate of 44% since 2009. That means that for every doubling of cumulative production, costs of solar panels drop by 44%.

Gaza / thoughts
The cruelty of how people in Gaza are being treated is hard to get my head around.
At one level I do understand it. Humans are able to think of other humans as not mattering & different from them. And a lot of people in Israel are _intentionally_ brought up to think of Palestinians as different from them & not mattering. Plus Israeli news doesn't show them the same things we're seeing. But still.
Dreading what's going to happen next in Rafah.
